New Report About Leadership and Web 2.0

Metiri Group report, Leadership for Web 2.0 in Education: Promise and
Reality, reveals a scenario of technology and related cultures developing
more rapidly than schools can innovate and adapt. This report defines Web 2.0 as "an online application that uses the World Wide Web (www) as a platform and allows for participatory involvement, collaboration, and
interactions among users." They add, "Web 2.0 is also characterized by the creation and sharing of intellectual and social resources by end users."

Key findings include:

1. The nation's school district administrators are overwhelmingly positive about the impact of Web 2.0 on students' lives and on their
education.
2. Keeping students interested and engaged in school is the top priority for Web 2.0 use in American schools.
3. The majority of district administrators believe that student use of Web 2.0 should be limited to participation on approved educational websites.
4. The majority of school districts ban social networking (70%) and chat rooms (72%) while allowing prescribed educational use for most of the other Web 2.0 tools (e.g., blogging, using wikis, sharing music or sound files, sharing visual media, posting messages, participating in virtual worlds, playing interactive games, creating polls or surveys, etc.).
5. While reporting low levels of general use, curriculum directors did describe significant opportunities for use of Web 2.0 tools in curricula and teaching materials.
6. Curriculum directors reported that Web 2.0 will be used most effectively at all grade levels in the content areas of social studies, writing, science, and reading.
7. While there was broad agreement that Web 2.0 applications hold educational value, the use of these tools in American classrooms remains the province of individual pioneering classrooms.
8. Web 2.0 is outpacing K-12 education's current capacity to innovate.
9. District administrators, the persons responsible for decision making on Web 2.0 in schools, are more passive than active users in the Web 2.0 space.

NIMAS - National Instructiona Materials Accessibility Standards

What Illinois has to say with the Illinois Textbook Loan Program - NIMAS outlines a set of consistent and valid XML-based source files created by K-12 curriculum publishers or other content producers. These source files can be used to create
accessible specialized formats (i.e. Braille, audio, digital, large-print, etc.) of print
instructional materials. The full set of files includes XML content files, a package file,
images, and a PDF file of the title page (or whatever contains ISBN and copyright
information).

Creating a road trip in Google Earth
It is helpful to create a word doc of your destinations and a little blurb about each place.
How to create: Open Google Earth>type in a location on the top left>click to go to that location>create a PushPin and drag the pin to the location>in the new window, type in title, in the description type the following:
< img src= “source code of the image”> (there is a space between the img and src and another space between = and “)
The image source code is gotten by right click (mac control click) on the image and select Copy Image Location
The code is then pasted in the quotes in the description window and clicked to make active the text describing the location is then pasted in the description window.
Click ok and File>Save in My Places
Continue to add new push pins and locations. Save when done.
